Tokuji Okada received the B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Niigata University, Japan, in 1969 and the D.E. degree in Control Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1982. From 1969 to 1987, he was with the Electrotechnical Laboratory, Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Tsukuba Science City, Japan. From 1987 to 2012, he was a Professor in the department of Cybernetics at Niigata University. Currently, he is a professor emeritus and a fellow of the Niigata University. He was a Visiting Research Scientist at the Robotics Institute of the Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, from Oct. '82 to Sept. '83, and also at the Faculty of Computer Science of the Karlsruhe University, Germany, from Apr. '88 to Mar. '89. His research interests are basically in mechatronics which are applicable to dexterous hands, man-machine interfaces, sensors, and robots for climbing stairs as intelligent systems. Prof. Okada is a member of the Robotics and Automation division of the IEEE, the Robotics Society of Japan, the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers in Japan, the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineering, and others.
